All life on earth is solar powered?
Let live Asked: All life on earth is solar powered?
how can this tie in with photosynthesis?
Answers:
Photosynthesis is the energy source for about 99% of life
the rest is fueled from chemicals form a kind of hydrothermal vent called a black smoker
anyway, photosynthesis is where plants and certain types of bacteria use sunlight to produce sugars for food, and other organisms use this energy as well to survive. Thus starting the basis for most off chains on the planet
Photosynthesis is the method by which energy from the Sun is converted to chemical energy, which is then used by the plant as a source of energy for growth, building the complex molecules that make up the plant. Those complex molecules are used as an energy source for other organisms, which eat them, break them down, and incorporate them into their own bodies.
A simple cycle would be, a field of grass uses solar energy to grow the grass. The grass is a source of energy for the cow that eats it.The cow is a source of energy for the human that eats it.So, you as a human can trace the energy you use to photosynthesis.
Another cycle is, millions of years ago, a field of grass uses solar energy to grow the grass.Over millions of years, the field is buried by natural processes, and the plant matter is changed by heat and pressure into oil.Humans extract the oil, refine it into gasoline, and use it for energy to drive their cars. So, your car runs (indirectly) on solar power.(The problem is, we're using these "fossil fuels" much faster than they can be regenerated naturally!)
But I'd caution that not ALL live on Earth is solar powered – there are organisms that live deep in the oceans that use chemosynthesis rather than photosynthesis, using chemicals that are released from the interior of the Earth, through vents in the sea floor.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemotroph
I hope that helps!
Possible, just not cost effective in the case of a battery charger, plenty of float type solar chargers out there cheap, but there only meant to maintain charge not charge a flat battery, however my house runs on solar provided its sunny, so I guess if I were to plug my conventional charger into the wall I would effectively be charging my battery using solar power.
