Could countries make money by…?

CRbounce Asked: Could countries make money by…? Producing renewable energy systems. E.g. if for instance the entire UK somehow made every building have solar panels and maybe a wind turbine. The government could then totally destroy all the power stations and depend on renewable energy for the electricity. Now of course, this is just a random idea, and you would still need to buy some oil for certain things like gas and fuel ect. But surely it would reduce our debt and we could spend the money on more important things. Now I know the obvious question 'where do we get the money from?' But if we could somehow get the money via borrowing or doing it slowly. This could drastically save us money and leave more room for economic growth. Now, I also know that this is totally random and of course if this were possible every country would be doing it. What I'm saying is, are we really going to leave this global problem to the last minute until the oil runs out? And I already know millions of people who already have renewable energy, but if we could do this on a national, then global scale, things [...]

How fast is an average alternator speed?

dglad4 Asked: How fast is an average alternator speed? I have a solar power system I built and due to the inefficiency of the photovoltaic process I don't get much current out of it. Now today I had the light bulb above the head glow. I have an old bicycle which some sneaky buggers stole my breaks off of. If I could prop up the rear wheel and attach an alternator to it I can make up to 100A whilst exercising. Only thing is I've found how much current an alternator can put out but left in the dark about the required input RPM to get that amount out. Now using the bicycles gearing I'm confident I can match the required ratio to achieve the alternators required RPM. So summed up, what speed (RPM) is an average alternators requirement? A cars RPM output is typically 2000-3000RPM right? I'm just guessing but i'm sure belts and gears will change what the alternator receives. Thanks

I bought some solar powered vents that have a tax credit, would I just enter it in as "solar" on my

Shawn Asked: I bought some solar powered vents that have a tax credit, would I just enter it in as "solar" on my I don't know how specific I have to be, but I bought some solar powered attic vent fans in 2011.They basically vent out your attic. On the box & website it says "eligible for 30% tax credit".They even have the link to IRS form 5695 on their web site…. Now with that said, there isn't a "specific" section for "solar attic vent fans".I'm using Turbotax and they have a section that is "solar electric costs".I guess I would just enter it on that. It's about $880 rounded to the nearest dollar.Should I just put it under "solar electric costs"?

Why do conservatives fearmonger about Iran when they themselves said all they want is nuclear energy

Utopian Liberal Hippie Asked: Why do conservatives fearmonger about Iran when they themselves said all they want is nuclear energy I don't get it. We should encourage renewable energy sources to help save the environment. Coal and oil are bad for the environment, and we need to save the Earth. Why do conservatives fearmonger about other countries wanting renewable energy?

Why is Another Taxpayer Funded $825 Million Solar Loan Going to Waste?

Hang Ten Asked: Why is Another Taxpayer Funded $825 Million Solar Loan Going to Waste? Solyndra? Let's try Genesis. In Southern California, federal and state governments have been working to expedite a solar project in order to satisfy President Obama's solar agenda. The problems that could derail the $825 million taxpayer funded project? Kit foxes and an ancient burial site. The $1-billion Genesis Solar Energy Project has been expedited by state and federal regulatory agencies that are eager to demonstrate that the nation can build solar plants quickly to ease dependence on fossil fuels and curb global warming. Instead, the project is providing a cautionary example of how the rush to harness solar power in the desert can go wrong possibly costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars and dealing an embarrassing blow to the Obama administration's solar initiative. Genesis had hoped to be among the first of 12 approved solar farms to start operating in Southern California deserts. To do so, it had to meet certain deadlines to receive federal assistance. The 250-megwatt plant, being built on federal Bureau of Land Management land 25 miles west of Blythe, is backed by an $825-million Department of Energy loan guarantee. Native [...]
