Solar power is being increasingly adopted by private home owners wanting to reduce their carbon footprint and help create a more sustainable environment. Two separate solar systems are available commercially for private home installation, usually on rooftops. First, solar hot water systems have been available for at least 30 years. Second, households are increasingly installing systems to power their homes. It is important to be clear that solar hot water systems do not generate electricity. Home solar electricity systems, even those with battery backup, usually also connect to the public electricity grid. Grid-connected systems ensure the household always has electricity available. Home photovoltaic systems can usually generate 1.5 kilowatts (Kw) to 10 Kw of power. For example, a 5 KW system can flow 5,000 watts of power at any one instant of time, enough to power 50 light bulbs rated at 100W each.
