Some awesome science projects for a 15 year old?

Zed I Say Asked: Some awesome science projects for a 15 year old?

Hi, I'm a homeschooler. I'm 15 years old and am entering a science fair for mixed schools and homeschoolers. There will be actual scientists there and you will be giving a presentation. The project can be anything to do with the Earth or nature. This includes biology, environmental sciences, earth sciences etc. Unfortunately when I signed up I was hoping to do something that had nothing to do with any of those – the principles of flight. Not birds, rather aeroplanes. I would have wanted to do Mars probes too, or a little bit of quantum mechanics.

The science fair is going to be in about two weeks if I'm not mistaken, and I want a good complex project, so I should probably get started now. I am however attending three online classes which each have several projects due by the end of the week, so something that doesn't take too long.

So I would like some ideas that are original (to some extent), certainly very creative and lots of fun, that if possible almost everybody will like. I would do an animal, but I have done so many other projects on animals that they get a little boring after a while.

I was thinking of doing:
renewable energy sources
animal allergens (focussing on cats)
how sunspots affect the earth
birds, bats and bugs: flight
oil sands & how they affect the environment
fudge and how it's a crystal

I have always been more into astronomy and physics, but enjoy earth sciences to some extent and love animals. I am also interested in issues like deforestation. If you have any suggest you think would be cool or good for me, that would be really good. Other suggestions too, would be nice.

Thanks!

I think all of your ideas are great. If you are interested in energy sources, I would consider focusing on automobiles, since it is a popular topic amongst adults. You can compare:

Diesel Cars
EV Cars (like the Nissan Leaf and Tesla)
Hybrid Cars (like the Chevy Volt and Toyota Prius)
High Efficiency Cars (like the Chevy Cruze Eco)

You can focus on how these cars work, where they get their energy from, and how much it costs to build as well as how much it costs to operate them.

Though, no matter what you pick, what makes a great science fair project is THE SCIENTIFIC PROCESS.Make sure what you demonstrate has a question, experiment, and conclusion. For example, one question might be, "Is it really cheaper and better for the environment to drive a Chevy Volt than to drive a Chevy Cruze Eco?"Then you could do some research on how they work, what batteries are made from, and how much pollution the plants make (you could make some neat models, too). Then you can make a conclusion based on that evidence.

Good luck!
