How to build a simple electric generator for school? And is it a good subject for my school science

And is it a good subject for my school science So basically, I would like to build a small-scale generator sort of like this one, http://www.re-energy.ca/docs/hydroelectric-generator-cp.pdf except i would like a way to show how much/and or store the energy it produces per day or week. So if I could hook this up to a battery, of if there's any device i can get that shows the total energy it has generated for that day… Basically that's it. What I'm trying to do is demonstrate that a turnstile connected to a generator in a busy store or building entrance (think Macy's front door) would produce clean, renewable energy. What do you think about my idea?
