Mechanical vs environmental engineering?
Ovrldd Asked: Mechanical vs environmental engineering? So, I want to follow a course with lots of calcs and on which I can help the planet. I heard that mechanical engineering is the most global eng. of all, and I can specify myself into something environmental-related, so I can build some stuff, like renewable energy cars.On the other hand, some people said that eletronic eng. is better for renewable energies. And, finally, I have env. eng., which is the most global one, but I heard that it has less calcs. and most of the jobs you get is by being a consultant. The only thing that admires me here are some clever stuff, like using trees to un-polute a river. And is it true that, if I follow env. eng., I CAN'T build renewable energie stuff? only mechanical eng. can build? So, I want to hear your opinion: which eng. should be the most safe one for me to follow? (P.S.: I heard that chemical eng. is also a good related eng.)

what is renewable energy?
Emily Asked: what is renewable energy? Hi Emily, renewable energy is energy made from a source that renews itself and doesn't ever run out. Some good examples are solar energy, which comes from the sun, hydro energy, from hydroelectric dams, they are powered by the running water in the river, and wind energy.Try not to confuse the phrase renewable energy with, "alternative energy," many people use the two phrases interchangably, which is incorrect.Alternative energy is any energy that is made from a new, or uncommon source.A good example of this is a natural gas furnace.Today, natural gas seems commonplace for heating homes, but 100 years ago, almost all homes were heated with either wood or coal. Many old homes have coal furnaces that were later converted to oil or natural gas.In this case, a home in say 1920 that had an oil fired furnace was heated using Alternative Fuel, but not Renewable Fuel, like solar, wind, hydro or biomass. Wood is actually a renewable energy source, since trees grow back after we cut one down and burn it.In many cases, a renewable energy source might be an alternative energy source as well.A home that is heated or powered by the sun uses [...]

Eco Friendly Homes: Using Trees and Shrubs Wisely
There are many ways to make eco friendly homes. Some ways, like building solar panels or homemade wind generators are a bit more complicated (but not difficult with the right instructions) than other ways like, planting trees and shrubs. I love using nature, like using trees and shrubs for shade and cooling. Not only is relatively low cost, there are many other benefits as well. Planting trees and shrubs is really good for the environment. They add value to your home. They can be used as natural fencing or other barrier; and they are a great way to reduce your energy costs if you use them wisely. The shade provided by a tree can reduce air temperatures up to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. Before you decide what trees and shrubs to buy, you should make a plan. Start with a drawing of your entire property, showing your home, driveway, patio, garage, sheds, etc. It is also useful to include the property dimensions. Then make marks on your diagram where the sun shines on your home – when it rises, midday, and when it sets. Take the change of seasons into consideration. Now decide where you would like shade. Some places shrubs [...]
